Self-hosted template where each AI coworker gets its own browser, files and gated tools behind one policy gateway

Key differences

Self-hosted template where each AI coworker gets its own browser, files and gated tools behind one policy gateway

  • Runs local. MIT template with no hosted version; needs a CopilotKit Intelligence project, which has a free plan and can be self-hosted, plus your own model key
  • Includes a Docker sandbox. Listed for 48 of 194 tools in this category.
  • Runs multiple agents. Listed for 165 of 194 tools in this category.
  • Keep in mind: Docker Compose brings up PostgreSQL and the shipped bots; sandboxed React components are authored separately in the admin UI.

“One month old and it already wants you to define your coworkers, your channels and your skills before it will do anything.”

What it is

OpenBot is CopilotKit's agent platform template: you clone it, replace the example tenant with your own coworkers, channels and skills, and run it on your own infrastructure with Docker Compose and your own PostgreSQL. Each bot gets a computer of its own — a real browser with its own logins, its own files, and only the tools granted — and everything it does to a computer, file, MCP server or component passes a fail-closed CEL policy gateway that decides before and records after. Any AG-UI endpoint works as a bot, so LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Pydantic AI and Google ADK agents all plug in.

Los Agentes on OpenBot

Who are they?
The ruling
El JuezThe judge

El Profesor admires the gateway and El Crítico points at what the gateway is bolted to, which is a template you clone rather than a product you upgrade.

Trial only
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

El Profesor scores the design well because permission is decided before an action and recorded after it, which is the correct order. El Crítico scores the same product lower because the thing carrying that design is a repository you fork, so every future improvement arrives as a merge you perform by hand.

Both are right and they are describing different lifespans. El Profesor is judging the idea; El Crítico is judging the year after you adopt it, and for a buyer that is the binding question. Trial only, with the exit criterion being one upstream release merged without a weekend.

El AmigoThe friend

Pick it when your agents need real accounts on real websites; pick a framework and write the plumbing yourself if they only need an API key.

6.3
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

The deciding trait is that each bot gets a computer of its own: a real browser carrying its own logins and its own files, rather than everything sharing one session and one cookie jar. If you have ever watched two automations fight over the same account, you already know why that matters more than any feature on the list.

What you are signing up for is operations. This is infrastructure you run, not software you open. Pick it if a browser with credentials is the actual requirement. Otherwise you want something smaller.

The README calls it alpha and a template rather than a product, nothing is published as a package, and there is no hosted version to fall back to.

Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

Distribution is the defect. You clone the repository and replace the example tenant with your own, which means your configuration and the upstream code occupy the same files. There is no version to pin and no dependency to bump. Every improvement upstream becomes a merge conflict against changes you made to make it yours, and that cost recurs forever.

What it does right is being explicit about the stage. The label is on the front page rather than discovered in an issue thread three weeks in.

A fail-closed policy gateway evaluates CEL expressions before an action and records it afterwards, so authorisation and audit are one component rather than two habits.

7.0
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis
  1. Fail-closed is the load-bearing word. A permission layer that defaults to denial is verifiable by construction, whereas a default-allow layer is only as complete as the list somebody remembered to write. 2. Placing the decision and the record in the same path means the log cannot drift from what was permitted, which is the failure that makes most audit trails useless.

  2. The expression language is an existing one rather than an invented DSL, so its semantics are already specified elsewhere and do not need to be trusted here.

CopilotKit publishes it free at 4,242 stars while requiring an Intelligence project to run, which is the funnel, and the free plan is the part that changes later.

6.0
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

The commercial design is legible and I do not mind it. Give away the platform, keep a dependency on a service you operate, and the free plan converts on the day a deployment matters. Four thousand stars measures reach into the audience that would pay, which is a better signal than the number itself.

Moat: the funnel, plus whatever the hosted service accumulates. Likely acquirer: an application platform buying the developer relationship. Position: viable, and price the free tier as a promotion rather than a term.

Self-hosting means my team runs Docker Compose and a PostgreSQL instance for sixty engineers, with no hosted option and no vendor to escalate to at two in the morning.

5.0
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

There is no seat price, and that is the smallest number in this review. The real cost is a database we back up, a compose deployment we patch, and an on-call rotation that now covers something the vendor cannot page for, because there is no hosted alternative and therefore no support relationship to buy.

Nothing here runs in our pipeline, so it does not integrate with review or CI as a step. Onboarding is an infrastructure exercise rather than a login. Not yet: revisit when a managed deployment exists to compare against.

MIT, an MCP client, and any AG-UI endpoint counts as a bot, so LangGraph, Mastra, CrewAI, Pydantic AI and Google ADK agents drop in without a rewrite.

7.5
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

Standardising on a protocol instead of a plugin interface is the decision I care about. My agent does not have to be written here, or in the same language, or against a proprietary base class; it has to answer at an endpoint. Five frameworks are named as working and the sixth is whatever I write tomorrow.

MCP servers attach as tools, the licence keeps a fork legal, and the whole thing runs on my hardware with my key. That combination is rare enough that I will forgive a lot elsewhere.
