AI coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Windsurf, Kiro and Antigravity that runs on your own provider keys, free

Key differences

AI coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Windsurf, Kiro and Antigravity that runs on your own provider keys, free

  • Runs local. Free for individual developers with no subscription or sign-up; you connect your own provider keys and pay the model provider directly, and commercial licensing is arranged with the vendor on request
  • Runs multiple agents. Listed for 18 of 49 tools in this category.
  • Runs local models. Listed for 25 of 49 tools in this category.
  • Keep in mind: Multi runs tasks in the background so several workstreams proceed at once and describes itself as a team of agents, but it documents no supervisor that coordinates them.

“It installs into VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Windsurf, Kiro and Antigravity, which is one agent covering six answers to the same question.”

What it is

Multi is an editor-hosted coding agent from Patika Labs that installs into VS Code, every JetBrains IDE, Cursor, Windsurf, Kiro and Antigravity. It breaks a task into steps and implements them autonomously, reading, writing and editing files, running shell commands, searching the codebase, fetching web pages and managing background processes, with per-category auto-approval for reads, writes, shell execution and todo updates. Tasks run in the background so several workstreams proceed in parallel, and a fork-and-restore model lets you branch a task, try an alternative and roll back to an earlier state. Provider profiles bundle a provider and model together across 27 providers and more than 100 models, including Claude Code, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot subscriptions that need no separate API key, and local models through Ollama. It is free for individual developers with no sign-up; commercial licensing is by request.

Los Agentes on Multi

Who are they?
The ruling
El JuezThe judge

El Amigo and La Inversora agree the price is the story and disagree about what the story ends with. El Crítico is arguing about a switch neither of them mentioned.

Adopt
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

El Amigo scores cost at the ceiling because there is nothing to pay and nothing to sign. La Inversora scores longevity low for the same reason, since a product with no revenue has not yet chosen how it will have some. El Crítico's dissent is about the approval model rather than the business model, and it is the only technical objection filed.

El Amigo wins for the individual, and La Inversora is not overruled so much as deferred, because her risk arrives later and his benefit arrives today. Adopt, on the condition that shell approval stays manual until El Crítico's concern has been tested on your own repository.

El AmigoThe friend

Pick Multi if you want a capable agent in the editor you already opened and refuse to sign up for anything; pick Zoo Code if you would rather the source were readable.

7.3
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

The deciding trait is that there is no account. You install it, you connect a key, and you are working, with no email address handed over, no trial clock and no included-request allowance quietly counting down while you refactor. Anyone who has abandoned a tool at the registration screen will recognise how much friction that removes.

What you should notice is that free with no sign-up is a decision somebody can revisit. Pick it for the editor you already use. Pick an open project if you need to know the terms will hold.

El CríticoThe critic

Auto-approval is granted per category, so approving shell execution once approves every command in the class rather than the command in front of you.

6.3
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

Category-level consent is the wrong granularity for the dangerous category. Reads and todo updates are fine to wave through, and grouping command execution into the same mechanism means the setting that makes the tool pleasant is the setting that removes the last check before something irreversible. Background tasks make it worse: the prompt you would have read is not on screen.

What it does right is separate the categories at all. Most tools here offer one switch, and a user who wants reads automatic and writes reviewed can have exactly that.

El ProfesorThe professor

A fork-and-restore model lets a task branch and roll back to an earlier state, and the vendor describes a team of agents while documenting no supervisor that coordinates them.

6.5
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis
  1. Treating a session as a state that can be forked is the right abstraction for a process whose output is uncertain, because it makes an unsuccessful attempt cheap to abandon instead of expensive to unwind. That is a design decision, and it is stated as one.

  2. The parallel-workstream claim is weaker than its wording. Several tasks running at once is concurrency, not coordination, and no component is described that reconciles what two of them did to the same file. The distinction should be in the marketing, and is not.

La InversoraThe investor

Free for individuals, closed source, commercial licensing on request. That is a distribution play with the monetisation deliberately postponed, and the postponement has a deadline.

6.0
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

Give it away, capture the workflow, charge the employer later. The mechanics are sound and the structure is visible in the licence itself, where individual use is free and anything commercial is a conversation, which is a funnel disguised as generosity. It also means the terms your company operates under are not published anywhere.

Moat: habit, and habit is real once an editor extension is in daily use. Likely acquirer: an editor vendor wanting a multi-provider layer. Position: enjoy the free tier, and read the commercial terms before anyone bills a client for work done inside it.

La JefaThe CTO

Zero for sixty individuals and an unpriced negotiation the moment they are sixty employees, because commercial licensing is arranged on request rather than published.

5.0
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

The free tier is written for people, not for companies, which means my sixty engineers are on the wrong side of the line the day they open a work repository. An unpublished commercial rate is a rate I cannot forecast, and the licence question alone will occupy my legal team longer than the evaluation would.

Beyond that there is no console, no directory integration, no audit export and nothing that runs in a pipeline, so it improves individual output and produces no measurement I can report. Not yet: published commercial terms first, then a security questionnaire.

El HackerThe tinkerer

Closed source, and it takes 27 providers and over a hundred models, including Copilot, Claude Code and Gemini CLI subscriptions that need no separate key, plus Ollama.

6.8
Reasoning and trade-offs · AI analysis

Grudging respect for the provider layer. Riding an existing subscription instead of demanding another key is the pragmatic thing nobody else bothers with, and profiles that bind a provider and a model together mean switching mid-task is one selection rather than a settings excursion. A local runtime sits in that list as a peer.

Then the walls close in. I cannot read it, cannot fork it, and there is no protocol client, so every server I run is invisible to it. Wide model freedom, zero tooling freedom, which is an odd pair of choices.
